Preparing for a Tummy Tuck: Tests, Timing and the Weeks Before Surgery
The outcome of a tummy tuck depends partly on what happens in the operating room and partly on what happens in the weeks before it. Pre-operative tests catch problems that would make surgery unsafe, and the changes you make to medicines, smoking and daily routine reduce the risk of complications. This guide walks through the examinations a Moscow clinic lists, why each matters, and how to prepare your body and home if you are travelling from another country.
Start with a stable weight and a clear plan
Preparation begins before any test. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and, when needed, repairs separated rectus muscles. It is not a weight-loss operation, and City Medical Centre in Moscow performs it at a stable weight. If you are still losing weight, the surgeon will usually advise finishing that first.
The second part of the plan is the type of operation. A classic tummy tuck treats the whole abdomen, repositions the navel and uses drains. A mini tummy tuck focuses on the lower abdomen with a shorter incision and no change to the navel. The choice affects the length of the hospital stay and recovery, so it shapes everything that follows.
Family plans matter too: the clinic advises surgery after the family is complete. At the first consultation, which is free and can be held online, share photos, your weight history and any pregnancies, so that the surgeon can tell you which version is likely and what the preparation will involve.
The test list and why each check matters
City Medical Centre lists the following examinations before abdominoplasty:
- hormone screening
- blood and urine tests
- coagulation tests
- biochemistry
- infection screening
- ECG and chest X-ray
- leg-vein ultrasound
- a GP check and a meeting with the anaesthetist
Some of these are routine for any operation under general anaesthesia. Others are especially relevant to a tummy tuck. Coagulation tests and the leg-vein ultrasound look for a tendency to form clots, which matters because the operation lasts two to four hours under general anaesthesia and mobility is limited for a while afterwards. Hormone screening can reveal causes of abdominal fat or weight change that should be treated first.
The clinic notes that tests are usually valid for ten to fourteen days. If you do them at home, check with the coordinator which results are accepted and plan the timing so they do not expire before the operation date. The tummy tuck pre-operative test list on the clinic's page is the reference to bring to your own doctor.
What to stop and when
City Medical Centre advises stopping smoking, alcohol and blood-thinning medicines seven to ten days before surgery. Each has a reason.
Smoking narrows small blood vessels. After a tummy tuck, the skin of the lower abdomen relies on a reduced blood supply while it heals, and smoking raises the risk of slow wound healing and skin problems along the incision. Nicotine from patches or vaping has a similar effect, so ask before switching.
Alcohol affects bleeding, hydration and how the body handles anaesthesia. Blood-thinning medicines and some supplements increase the risk of bleeding and hematoma. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own: agree the plan with the doctor who prescribed it and tell the surgeon the outcome.
Mention everything you take, including hormonal contraception, painkillers, herbal products and vitamins. The anaesthetist uses this information to plan the operation safely. The restrictions continue after surgery: no smoking, alcohol, sauna, pool or tanning for at least a month.
Preparing for recovery before you leave home
Recovery after a tummy tuck is easier when everything is ready in advance. The hospital stay is one to three days, and a mini tummy tuck usually needs one day. Drains are usually removed after two days and stitches after seven days.
Compression is worn day and night for three to four weeks, then by day for about another month, with a binder for one and a half to two months in total. Ask the clinic which garment you will receive and whether a spare is advisable.
For two to three weeks you should avoid exertion and lifting. Before you leave home, arrange help with shopping, children and housework for that period. Place everyday items at waist height so you do not need to bend or reach. Loose clothes that open at the front make dressing easier.
Office work is usually possible after two to three weeks. Most swelling is gone in about a month, an interim result appears at six to eight weeks, and the final result and scar are assessed at six to twelve months. Planning time off with this timeline in mind avoids pressure to return too soon.
Questions for the coordinator and the surgeon
Patients travelling from abroad have extra practical questions. The clinic's page does not describe travel arrangements, accommodation or the total number of days you should stay in Moscow, so ask the coordinator directly. Useful questions include:
- Which tests can I do at home, and which must be done at the clinic?
- How recent must the results be on the day of surgery?
- Will I have a classic or a mini tummy tuck, and how does that change my stay?
- What should I bring: garments, documents, medicines?
- How will follow-up work once I am back home?
The price is not published; it is quoted at the consultation and fixed in the contract. Ask what that figure includes, such as tests done at the clinic, the hospital stay and garments.
Patients in Canada can start from the abdominoplasty information for patients from Toronto. Careful preparation does not guarantee a perfect recovery, but it removes many avoidable risks before the operation even begins.
